We started
the day early, leaving the campground at 5:30 AM Central Time, traveling on
I-70 W. Our planned route was to go I-70
W to Denver, then north on I-25 to Cheyenne, WY. Towns along the way include Hays, KS; Denver,
CO; Fort Collins, CO; then to Cheyenne, WY.
As the sun
came up this morning, we drove through the Kansas plains and wind farms.
Writing our blog while driving across the
plains is a good way to kill some time.
The right
brake light on the tow dolly malfunctioned and not responding to brakes or turn
signals. Considering the rig has 26
exterior light bulbs that must function, having one light out may not be bad
odds. We stopped at a rest area to walk
the dogs and work on the trailer light.
The temperature was 60 degrees and sunny with a light breeze. When we took the lens cap off the trailer
light, we found the light bulb had shattered, which seemed odd. We scavenged a bulb from our magnetic brake
lights for the toad which we're not using at the moment. We grabbed a replacement bulb when we stopped for gas.
Today the wind was quite strong and made driving difficult. It started from the north and hit us broadside on the right for four hours at 90 degrees. The wind decided to try out the other side when it shifted 180 degrees and blew across us from the left all the way through Colorado. Having our 31 feet long by 13 feet high sides made for some challenging sailing or driving. The rig was a noticeable wiggle wagon.
Adjustments had to be made to
the generators' carburetor due to the increase in altitude. When we approached Denver we were over 5000
feet. The adjustment is just a matter of
turning a small dial on the generators' carburetor, but it's something you
don't want to forget to do. A happy
generator makes for happy campers.
We traveled
through 3 states today .... Kansas, Colorado, and entered Wyoming. The clocks were adjusted to Mountain Time,
but our bodies are still on Eastern time.
The dogs are asleep by 7PM thinking it is bedtime.
As we entered
Wyoming, there was a statue of a Buffalo on a hillside near the
interstate.
Cheyenne KOA
is a nice overnight stop with easy access from the interstate. We stayed here last year. As you travel west and north, the RV parks
become more like gravel parking lots than a place for an extended camping stay.
Tomorrow we begin seeing new places and new things as we make our way across Wyoming to Dubois. Wyoming is one of the prettiest states we have ever visited. Hopefully we can take get some good pictures to post.
1500 miles down..... 3500 miles left to travel.
And oh- forgot to mention- especially for our friends in the deep south. It's been chilly- yes CHILLY all day today. We started from Salina, KS in the upper 50's and at dusk temps were barely in the low 60's. The shorts are packed away and jeans are in vogue. Joy wore her fleece jacket in Cheyenne tonight. (Is today really July 7?). And here at the end of our fourth day on the road--- and once again its raining. Any bets on tomorrow?
