7/17/15 MILEPOST "0" ON ALASKA HIGHWAY

We left the Hinton KOA at 6AM this morning and about 2 miles from the campground we saw some Caribou grazing on the side of the road.

The road to Grand Prairie, AB is a 2-lane highway that passes through a lot of mining country.  There was some road construction and the road was a bit bumpy in places.  The crack in the windshield is growing.  UGH!

The roads after Grand Prairie is rather flat and crossed farmlands, canola and wheat fields.  This road also was riddled with road resurfacing.  The moho and toad is are getting very dirty.

We made it to the Alaska Highway about 6 hours after leaving Hinton.  We stopped at the visitor's center and took the mandatory pictures of the mile marker.   We met some people from Florida there who were 1st timers to this area.  They were excited to finally be getting on the "highway".

There was more road construction in the Peace River Valley area.  This is one of the more picturesque areas between Dawson Creek and Fort St. John where we were stopping for the day.  The only problem with the road construction in this area was the 10% grade going downhill with flagmen stopping traffic (including semi-trucks).  We cleared the construction zone without incident.

After getting gas, we settled into Ross McLean's Rotary RV Park next to Charlie Lake.  The campsites are nothing more than a gravel parking lot with electric and water hook-up.  There is a memorial to the Army Soldiers who died while working on the Alaska Highway.
